Our design team presented to students from the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences

Every year, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences immediately introduces its first-year Communication and Multimedia Design students to the creative industry. With that in mind, it asked Unc Inc to show them how we work and give them an idea of the job of their future.

Immersing in the creative industry, remotely?

Normally, such introductions take the form of short field trips; students visit an agency, get a taste of the atmosphere and perhaps have a short work session. This year, of course, everything is different and we had to come up with another way to give the students a good impression from a distance of the world in which they might later find themselves. Helped by our own experiences, we quickly found a format: a webinar via Zoom, combined with the Q&A tool Slido to encourage interaction.

About an agency on a mission

Jeffrey kicked off the presentation by presenting our agency. What kind of company are we and what typifies our culture? What mission are we all chasing and what clients are we working with in that endeavor? How do we use creativity and technology to make a positive impact on the world? Jeffrey then elaborated on the principles of "human centered design" and how they guide our design process; how we look beyond the user to create sustainable value for our clients' clients.

Impact, sure, but how do you do it practically?

Our ideals only gain value if we are also able to put them into practice. So we have that positive impact mainly in our work for kindred clients. Time for Semih to take over and talk about our work for HVC; the sustainable waste and energy company. How do we create a positive perception of the brand and use inclusive design to move 1.5 million residents to work together for a cleaner world?

A tip from the chef

Finally, Erik went into the depths of UX design with an introduction to the Design System: what exactly is it, why should you use it and how can you use Atomic Design as a method to determine the right structure? To make it all manageable for aspiring designers, he closed with 3 tips you can use to get a good start.
