Working together for a better future for refugees

More than 82 million people worldwide are refugees due to war, political violence, their sexual orientation, origin or religion. Some seek protection in our country. With a digital ecosystem, we help the Netherlands Council for Refugees to provide refugees and volunteers with information, promote collaboration and knowledge sharing, and raise donations.

Organization

VluchtelingenWerk supports refugees and asylum seekers in the Netherlands, with about 320 local chapters and thousands of volunteers. Due to the merger of five regional foundations into one national foundation, the online provision of information including news, vacancies, volunteer recruitment and projects also had to be restructured.

Challenge

Because the Drupal 7 CMS was no longer supported, a new website had to be developed that would serve the various target groups even better: refugees need practical information quickly, others are encouraged to donate or become volunteers. In addition, to prevent knowledge and information from becoming fragmented in their decentralized organization, a user-friendly intranet was needed.

Solution

With a headless Drupal multisite with React frontend, VluchtelingenWerk now has a versatile and future-proof online platform for effective corporate communication. In addition, we developed an intranet to share news, knowledge and services internally, bringing employees and volunteers together in one familiar environment.

Clarity through simplicity

On the old website, the navigation was a jumble. We have reduced it to the essentials so that there is more focus on the most important actions. The information is structured so that different audiences can now quickly find their way to the parts that are most important to them. For those who want to browse, we let the content lead the way. All content is thereby linked to relevant call-to-actions so that the visitor has a clear action perspective.

On-site campaigning

Campaigns can easily be highlighted on the homepage. In fact, with the new building blocks, the Refugee Council Netherlands team created a new campaign page in no time. This functionality proved extremely valuable when war broke out in Ukraine. Within just two weeks, more than 11,000 Dutch people had signed up to volunteer via specially designed section. More on that, here.
