No more empty vans on the road

How do you help founders with little technical knowledge or seed capital to make their online start-up a success?

Brenger (transl. 'Bringer') connects transport requests with unused space in delivery vans coming your way anyway. Not only does this make the transport of furniture and other large items cheap and easy, it could also reduce Dutch CO2 emissions by 0.5%. By challenging their business case, helping to secure funding and building a user-friendly platform, we helped the founders to become the innovator of the Dutch transport market.

From a business plan to a start-up strategy

Early 2016 we met Derk van der Have and Wisse Koedam. These ambitious young entrepreneurs had a great idea for a tech start-up but were lacking the required technical knowledge. Larger seed capital would also considerably increase their chances of a good start. Therefore we decided to start with a pitch deck sprint. In a number of sessions we helped sharpen their ideas, validate the business case and build a roadmap towards launch.

Supply and demand and beyond

We started working in sprints on a platform that brings together demand (for the transport of furniture) and supply (of empty vans). But as supply and demand aren't balanced in all parts of the Netherlands we help ensure national coverage by continuously optimizing location-based pricing. Additionally, an intelligent mailing system informs couriers about orders based on the routes they frequently take.

More than meets the eye

Ongoing user research helped us to continuously improve clients' and shippers' experience. But under the hood, the platform also streamlines internal processes. A management and support dashboard for instance, helps Brenger process payments and ensure a high level of service.

A pitch deck to help secure funding

Next step was to create a brand and a story. Through a number of short iterations, we designed the brand, added focus and a sense of purpose to their store before designing the first screens of the platform we envisioned. Now armed with a powerful pitchdeck, Derk and Wisse went on a quest to find and convince potential investors. I didn’t take long before they secured their first round of funding.

Autonomous and technologically independent

Where countless tech start-ups struggle in forming an effective development team, Brenger got a jump start by bringing Unc Inc on board, basically as CTO with an experienced team. With the platform running smoothly and internal processes automated, it became time to in-source development and support. To make that transition as smooth as possible, we started with helping Brenger to find the right CTO. Once he gathered a team of developers, we carefully and sequentially handed over the different element.

Cheap, easy and sustainable

We're only too proud to have been able to escort our friends from those first steps to their current succes. Now Brenger is the official transport partner of the likes of Marktplaats (a local eBay subsidiary) and BVA Auctions. With an average rating of 9.1 users are loving the service. But the biggest gain may be for us all: already Brenger has saved over 3.6 million kilograms of CO2 emission. And counting.
