Met: Evianne

Some are driven by an urge to innovate, others want above all to give their creativity free rein. But all of us share the ambition to make something we can be proud of. In an attempt to introduce ourselves, in this series we let our employees talk about their lives and work, their drives and dreams. Today it's our turn: Evianne.

Introduce yourself

I am Evianne, a native of Zeeland who landed in Amsterdam via the United States and Utrecht in 2014. In daily life project manager at Unc Inc and part-time yoga teacher. I think I am a typical case: you get the girl out of Zeeland but not Zeeland out of the girl. I prefer to be near the sea, you can wake me up in the middle of the night for a surf session or a walk along the Oosterschelde.

What is weird about you?

My fickleness, one day I am overjoyed with my life in the city, the next day I would prefer to move to the countryside and live as self-sufficiently as possible. My need for quiet and busy and cozy is very changeable.

Why is it fun working with you? And why not?

I am stable, cooperative and can keep a good overview. That is a nice energy to have in a challenging work environment. Why not? I am sometimes impatient because I like to see results quickly. Sometimes it bothers me to have to wait for others.

If I had gone left before, I wouldn't be doing project management at Unc Inc now but...

I don't believe in going left or right. If a new opportunity presents itself and it feels right, I take it. I live by the motto, "Always keep learning," that way every day is interesting and challenging.

Describe your team, what are you good at?

We are a diverse team consisting of visual & interaction designers, developers and a project manager. Our strength lies in working together, we all have unique talents and in the projects we do these talents come together. Of course we also have our weaknesses, but precisely because we are multidisciplinary, we can complement each other well. That way we achieve the best result together.

What do you like about working at Unc Inc?

I find it incredibly cool that I see much of our work reflected in everyday life because so many of Unc Inc's clients are active in the social field. For example, I read daily articles on OneWorld's platform and volunteer for The Rainbow Group. I find it special to see tangible results from the work we do and that gives me a lot of energy.

What has been your biggest challenge at Unc Inc?

Our work is not always immediately visible on the front end of a website or an app. I see how much time and energy is put into fixing a difficult bug or building a new feature by a developer. A remote customer often does not see this effort. Making work transparent and including customers in the process is one of my biggest challenges.

Unc Inc is struggling to find female candidates. What do you think about that and what do you think is causing it?

Tech is one of the sectors where women have yet to catch up. With five men in charge, Unc Inc is of course historically a male-owned company, it has a bit of a "male culture" as a result. I believe in the power of mixed teams. It would be great to have more women on board! Nevertheless, what characterizes Unc Inc is that, above all, everyone feels very much at home. That is a special feeling and we need to hold on to it.

What is your experience with remote working?

Although I miss the sociability and atmosphere in the office, I find that remote working is going very well so far. We have the infrastructure and tools to keep it going for a long time. My day starts with a meeting with the whole team (the daily scrum) and we end the working day with a check-out. We have also already had some good online sessions/workshops both internally and with customers. We are quickly adapting to this new reality!

What is your best reading, listening, watching or doing tip and why is it worthwhile?

The Bhagavad Gita, a 5000 year old spiritual text with a message that is relevant to anyone, in any time period, in any place in the world.
