You haven't always been a frontend developer. How did you come to this field?

After graduating (Art and Technology at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, ed.) I worked as a graphic designer and operations technician in the television world. It was great to work on programs like De Wereld Draait Door or the NOS Journaal and your work was seen by millions of people. Yet at some point I started to miss the challenge. I started thinking to myself to discover where I could find it again.

During college, my focus was mainly on interaction design. Developing new user interfaces was something that gave me energy; to make something from my design that could be used. However, there was limited focus in the course on the technology to make that possible. While working in the television studio or with synthesizers in my music studio, I have always had a "knack" for technology. To develop and use that more, that was to be my next step.

At the beginning of the pandemic, things changed. To further enhance my skills as a developer, I took a short course at Codaisseur in JavaScript and React. Then for a longer period I received full-day coaching in programming from Rein op 't Land.

Why did you choose Unc Inc?

All things considered, I was looking for a place where I could develop myself further, a place where I would not only be challenged as a developer but where I could also express myself as a designer. Unc Inc seemed like the ideal place for this. Because they work in multidisciplinary production teams, you are involved in the whole process. As a designer myself, I already applied the principles of Human Centered Design, so when I saw that Unc Inc focuses on this, I immediately became enthusiastic.

In addition, I found the customer profile very attractive: 'brands with a mission'. As a programmer you quickly end up in the corporate world, in banks or consultancies. You are such a small cog; if you don't pay attention here, you destroy more than you create. That I can make a positive contribution to society or the environment through my work is essential to me.

The bright minds I came across on the website were the deciding factor. They seemed very nice people, also to work with.

What is your first impression?

That I was not mistaken about the bright minds, haha. An environment with pleasant people, where there is room for questions and you are listened to. It's hard work but the days fly by. I enjoy what I do, I am taking on more and more responsibilities and I am learning a lot. I get my motivation from the drive within my team.

The location also helps, of course. Every day I enjoy cycling across the shipyard where our office is located, past people who put their heart and soul into refurbishing their boats, only to do the same in my code.

What are you going to work on in the coming time?

In the coming period we will be busy with a website for Onder de Pannen (a project of De Regenboog Groep, ed.), an application for Willem (a start-up in making existing homes more sustainable) and the National Museum of World Cultures(Tropenmuseum, the Africa Museum and Museum Volkenkunde). In addition, we are continuously working on the new mobile app for HVC, a waste management company committed to sustainability. In the latter I was introduced to mobile development for the first time, which was very instructive. We apply a lot of gamification which makes it extra fun and challenging.

In a few months we will start working with the team on a project website for the government. This promises to be a challenging project. We have to create a lot of interaction and experience with 3D models and animations, without compromising accessibility or the central government's house style. I am looking forward to it.

Like Bernard, do you want to work on digital products with positive impact?

In a young and friendly team, we work on meaningful projects. But whatever we create is always an intense interplay of individuals. That's why we look beyond the list of professional skills to your human qualities and help you develop both. Something for you?
